The Mum Tag!

8 July 2019

A while back, the lovely Emily Norris created the Mum tag and tagged everyone, so I thought why not give this a go myself? So here it is!

1. Favourite mum hack?

Get those vegetables chopped! I like to buy my vegetables fresh like carrots, parsnips, sweet potatoes, squash etc and then I’ll just spend a few moments chopping and organising them into freezer bags and put them in the freezer to be used later. That way when I’m cooking I don’t have to spend time peeling and chopping.

2. Most embarrassing mum moment?

When said child decided to squish strawberries on the chair and I sat down without realising, wearing a white dress! You can just imagine how that story went…

3.What part of the day do you love the most?

Coming home from work to cuddles with A. I’m not sure how it’s possible at this age but A has some awareness of the time, as soon as it’s 5:30pm (I get to my Mum’s by 5:45-6) she gets my Dad and herself to wait by the front door for me so when I approach the porch I can see her.

4. What part of the day do you like the least?

Nappy changes! We’re in the middle of potty training but it’s quite a relaxed approach as we’re not ‘forcing’ it on her. But honestly, I cannot wait until she’s completely out of nappies as it’s so difficult to wipe her clean when she’s done a poo as she refuses to lay still and kicks me in the face.

5. The worst thing someone said to you when you were pregnant?

Be grateful.
Saying something like that during a pregnancy after a loss is so insensitive. Of course you’re grateful for what you have but that doesn’t negate the constant fear of losing your child again or having another baby doesn’t mean you’re meant to stop missing your baby that died.

6. Baby name you didn’t agree on?

Ruxar- um, no thank you.

7.Do you co sleep?

There’s a difference between co sleeping and bed sharing but often people get mixed up. Co sleeping is when you’re sharing a room but baby can still be in their cot and bed sharing is well bed sharing! For the first year and a half A slept in her cot in our room until she reached a phase and completely refused to go into her cot, so we have just taken a side off, so she’s still in her cot but can sometimes roll over to me and I secretly love it!

8. Something you bought but never used?

Milestone cards.

What a waste of my £10! I bought them when she turned 6 months (because I’m an idiot) so the previous months weren’t even used. Although, I did start using the monthly ones, the others like first step, first word etc I didn’t.

9. 3 hospital bag must haves?

  • Pads! Even though, hospitals do provide them, they do prefer you to bring your own plus you know which pads are better suitable for you.

  • Loose clothingfor yourself for after birth. I make sure I size up because after birth you can feel a mixture of feelings, you also end up sweating a lot (how lovely!) so it’s best not to have tight fitted clothes.

  • Camera/Phone and chargerso you don’t forget to capture those beautiful moments! And check if they’ve actually been taken and saved! We had a couple of days where I thought I’d lost those photos and I was so heartbroken, luckily they were retrieved!

10. Are you routine mum or a go with the flow mum and what does bedtime look like?

I was a routine mum for well over a year and even though I still am, I am more relaxed now for example, I use to make sure we’re home for naps as ‘she must sleep in the cot’ but now if we need to go out, we go out. I use to leave gatherings much earlier on to make sure A is in bed for a certain time and even though I don’t stay still too late, I don’t panic if I have to end up staying a little longer etc

Our bedtime routine differs from weekdays to weekends, I try to keep the routine the same but on weekdays on a good day A is asleep by 8 and on weekends by 7.

We start off by tidying her toys, then changing into PJs, brushing teeth, giving A a little massage, then reading a story in bed, occasionally A may ask for a feed.

We don’t do baths as baths have an opposite effect on my child so she has a bath during the day.

11. What type of labour did you have? What pain relief did you choose?

Both labours were spontaneous with waters breaking prematurely. First was quite quick whereas with A it felt like a year because only one set of bags were broken but the doctor didn’t realise so that caused it to be slow!

No pain relief here, just breathing techniques! Although at one point at the suggestion of my sister in law I did try gas and air but it didn’t work for me and was just disgusting!

12. Have you ever been mum shamed?

Not to my face but who knows what people say behind your backs.

13. The biggest challenges you’ve faced since becoming a mum?

There are a lot but I guess the one that tops it all off is the lack of sleep. If you’ve been following us from the beginning of my blogging journey then you’ll be very much aware how much we have struggled with sleep. Hearing other mums talk about their children sleeping through use to get to me a lot and make me think that I’m doing something wrong as a Mum, it’s taken me time to accept it (we’re much better now, phew!) but it has been a shock to the system.

14. The best bit advice you’ve ever been given – Biggest piece of advise you’d give to a new mum?

Just don’t compare yourself or your child to others, that’s it.

15. Who’s your mum crush? And who do you tag?

In the offline world, my own mum is my mum crush! But online, I don’t have a particular mum crush as I love bits and pieces if not all qualities of the mums I follow online.

I’d like to tag anyone who’d like to give this a go!

Hope you all have a wonderful week ahead!
