Eid Celebrations

29 June 2018

It’s never too late to write up an informative post to enhance your knowledge is there? I got a great response for my Ramadan post so that only encouraged me to share the festivities of Eid with you all too, albeit two weeks late.

Eid ul-Fitr is the festival that marks the end of Ramadan and this year took place on Friday 15th June 2018 in the U.K.

The day begins with special Eid prayers at the Mosque which are not compulsory for women. When I was younger I use to wonder why and my Dad use to say that for the entire month of Ramadan women have worked so hard so they should be given the choice.

Whilst the husband went for the prayers, I got myself and Little A ready so we could leave home as soon as he got back. We make sure we dress our finest and one tradition for women is to apply henna on their hands – however, having already had my hands full with Little A, I didn’t this year.

Little A’s outfit

My outfit (not me in the picture), what I loved the most about my outfit that it was a 2 in 1, I actually spent the most of the day without the gown on as it was just too hot.

My matching shoes and purse!

Unfortunately, I couldn’t remember where I had put m matching bangles and jewellery a few days before and was absolutely gutted as it turned out to be my first Eid without accessories but I guess they say first time for everything for a reason eh?

For us, we begin our day by visiting our son at the cemetery, to wish him a happy Eid – if this isn’t the first thing that I do on the day then I feel as if though something’s missing.

We then make our way to my Mum’s home where all the family have gathered. We greet each other by hugging and laugh saying ‘Eid Mubarak’ which basically means Happy Eid.

We all then sit down to have a big sweet breakfast together, once this is over with it’s time for the little ones to make mischief and by little I don’t generally mean kids!

This Eid has a tradition that anyone older than you has to give you money and you can outright bluntly demand it, the money given is called an ‘Eidhi’. So it doesn’t really matter how old you are as long as you have older siblings, parents , uncle, aunties and older cousins around then you’re in for a treat!

Here are the money envelopes I prepared for those younger than myself and the husband – including his sister who isn’t younger but actually older. It’s also a part of Eid for brothers to give their sisters Eidhi too no matter what their age.

The day consists of spending quality time together, whether that’s at home or if the weather permits to go out. Eating scrumptious food as well as playing party games which can be anything from charades to whatever your mind comes up with. What was so special about this Eid was that even Little A joined in with the games!

In my family, I have created a game for the children called the ‘Eidhi Hunt’ it is pretty much the same as an Egg Hunt during Easter but instead of going on a hunt for eggs, I make each child a treasure map (adults can join in too!) and we go on a Eidhi Hunt which is actually chocolate money. I honestly cannot wait for Little A to be old enough to participate in this!

Some Eid decorations – what I really love about this is that there are no set colours to coordinate with – you can choose whichever colours to suit your style.

*~*~*

So there you have it, a little informative post to show you what Eid ul-Fitr is all about! But this isn’t just the only Eid celebrated in the year, we have another one coming up very soon and I’m already excited to share its history and traditions with you all.
